What is Cellulite?

Cellulite is a very common, harmless skin condition that causes lumpy, dimpled skin on thighs, hips, buttocks and abdomen. The condition is most prevalent in women and can be very disconcerting to us. Cellulite that is more severe makes the skin appear rumpled and bumpy with areas of peaks and valleys in the fat layer that leads to the terms given this condition of “cottage cheese” or “orange peel” skin appearance. Cellulite is most common around the thighs and buttocks, but it can also be found on the breasts, lower abdomen and upper arms.

Little is actually known about the causes of cellulite, but it involves the way that fat is compartmentalized in the subcutaneous (fatty) layer under the skin, mostly in women. Fibrous connective tissue cords (septa) that tether the skin to the underlying muscle are like tiny walls between the fat compartments. As fat cells accumulate, they push up against the skin, while the long, tough fibrous septae cords pull down, creating an uneven skin surface or dimpling appearance of cellulite.

Risk Factors

Cellulite is much more common in women than in men due to the fact that men do not possess the same compartmentalization of their fat with this particular septal arrangement that tugs down on the skin to result in dimpling. Also, women’s fat is typically distributed in the thighs, hips and buttocks – common areas for cellulite. Cellulite is also more common with aging, when the skin loses elasticity. Weight gain can make cellulite more noticeable, but some lean patients have cellulite as well. It tends to be a little bit genetic, but an inactive lifestyle can also increase your chances of having cellulite, as can pregnancy. Lastly, there are also theories that a disorderly amount of fluid around the fat cells, or a disordered lymphatic system, increases the development of cellulite.

Treatments for Cellulite

In addition to maintaining a healthy weight, lifestyle and regular physical activity, there are some very good options for the treatment of bothersome cellulite. Our office understands that cellulite isn’t your fault, and we are dedicated to researching today’s leading cellulite options! We believe that the best recourse for cellulite is to treat it from both the outside as well as the inside. Skin tightening, fat reduction and intentional targeted division of the septae are excellent options for the permanent elimination of cellulite. VASER SHAPE and EXILIS tighten skin and reduce fat; MORPHEUS8, Exion Fractional RF, and PROFOUND tighten skin and reduce the peaks and valleys of the lumpiness of fat compartmentalization; and AVELI and VASER SMOOTH can divide the septae themselves.

While liposuction with Vaser Smooth is a great surgical option for the treatment of unwanted fat and cellulite dimpling, many patients prefer a lesser invasive option. Aveli is the only minimally invasive procedure that uses a hand-held device guided by Dr. Samuels and her expertly trained providers to manually target and release the septal bands causing cellulite from the inside-out.

Exilis Ultra 360

Exilis Ultra 360

The Exilis Ultra 360 is a groundbreaking device that uniquely combines radiofrequency and ultrasound technologies, offering comprehensive solutions for various body concerns from head to toe. This FDA-approved, nonsurgical procedure effectively addresses issues such as fine lines around the eyes and mouth, sagging jawlines, stubborn fat deposits, cellulite, and love handles. With precise control over power, heating, and cooling, the treatment targets deep tissues while ensuring a comfortable experience and yielding firmer, more youthful-looking skin.

Vaser Shape

VASER Shape utilizes a non-invasive approach combining ultrasound diathermy and zonal lymphatic massage to target cellulite and enhance body contours. By applying high-frequency sound waves and gentle massage, it effectively improves blood circulation, lymphatic drainage, and temporarily reduces cellulite appearance. It serves as an ideal standalone treatment or complements body contouring procedures, such as liposuction, to minimize postoperative discomfort and swelling.

Exion RF Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic technique that merges microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) energy for improved skin rejuvenation and tightening. It employs a device with fine needles to create micro-injuries on the skin, triggering natural healing and collagen production, while RF energy heats the deeper skin layers to boost collagen and elastin. This dual action reduces wrinkles, scars, and enhances skin texture and firmness.

Morpheus8 is an innovative, nonsurgical microneedling treatment that addresses common signs of aging such as wrinkles and sagging skin. Using advanced radiofrequency technology and variable depth needle penetration, it stimulates collagen production for a more youthful appearance. Compared to other similar treatments, Morpheus8 offers shorter downtime and faster treatment sessions, making it a cost-effective and convenient option for rejuvenating both facial and body skin.

Microneedles are used to safely deliver radiofrequency heat below the skin's surface, tightening and smoothing the skin without the need for surgery or disrupting the skin's natural connections. This procedure takes an hour, causes minimal bruising and swelling for 3-5 days, and provides tighter, smoother skin with maximum results after 9-12 months.

Avéli is an FDA-approved minimally invasive procedure developed to address cellulite at its core in regions like the buttocks and thighs. It works by precisely targeting the septae – the small partitions between fat pockets that pull down on the skin above, leading to the characteristic dimpling of cellulite. Through the insertion of Avéli under the skin, these septae are severed, effectively smoothing out cellulite in just one treatment session.
